Marta Pérez García
Marta Pérez García was selected for la Campechada 2014 (a festival that commemorates the work of graphic artists from Puerto Rico) dedicated to Myrna Báez.
This woodcut is inspired in Myrna Báez piece The Red Plantains I saw in the mountains of Baez painting a dead female body and this is what inspired my work. I was mourning, affected by the death of my sister, and feeling lonely, so I decided to use my own iconography but inspired by the image in The red Plantains.
Doña Myrna used to say that my pieces look like Mexican novels: you can make many out of just one. From there came the idea of fragmenting the image and there are several stories. Also I was feeling so broken inside and I tried to reflect that, like an echo of the situation in Puerto Rico, of our colonial legacy, of all those fractures.
