Anonymous Was A Woman (AWAW) recently announced the winners of its 2025 awards, recognising 15 artists over the age of 40 who have made significant contributions to the arts while continuing to create new works. Founded in 1996 by artist Susan Unterberg, this organisation is dedicated to supporting artists who identify as women at crucial moments in their lives and careers.
Among this year's winners is Puerto Rican multimedia artist Dhara Rivera, whose work focuses on an ecological platform. Rivera explores, through different methods, materials and strategies, the components that influence our current relationship with the natural world, encompassing both animal and plant aspects. Her research incorporates social, political, poetic, and personal perspectives, allowing her to address complex and relevant issues in the contemporary artistic context.
Founder Susan Unterberg stated, "At a time when the arts and women's rights are under threat, I am honoured to recognise this year's extraordinary group of artists, each of whom expands the field in profound and original ways. I started Anonymous Was A Woman in part as a response to the end of federal funding for individual artists. Nearly thirty years later, that same need motivates us to continue our work."
